Town of Grafton Right to a Sustainable Energy Future & Community Self-Government Ordinance..

Grafton, Grafton County, NH

Legislation Status: Passed

Topics: Community Self-Government, Renewable Energy, Rights of Nature

Notes:

This Ordinance prohibits the land acquisition necessary for the construction of unsustainable energy systems, or land acquisition necessary to engage in construction or siting of any structure to be used in the operation of unsustainable energy systems, because such actions would violate the right of Grafton residents to a sustainable energy future. “Unsustainable energy systems” means those systems that are controlled by state and federal energy policies, rather than community controlled energy policies; including industrial scale wind power when it is not locally or municipally owned and operated.

Grafton’s Town Meeting voted to approve the Community Bill of Rights by a vote of 255 to 252.

Grafton, Danbury, Hebron, and Alexandria, New Hampshire, all passed rights-based ordinances specifically to stop commercial wind turbines from sprouting all over their towns that are not of, by, and for the people. These ordinances prohibit other “unsustainable energy systems” as well.
