Event hosted by The Oregon Community Rights Network (ORCRN)
Over the last three decades big corporations have managed to use the power of state preemption to override, deny, and even crush local democracy. Better known as “ceiling” preemption, state legislatures on behalf of corporate interests, have been rapidly adopting laws in the areas of public health, agriculture, energy production, forestry, worker’s rights, housing access, gentrification, civil rights, and communications that severely undermine or outright deny communities from stopping or pushing back against these actions that violate health, safety, and welfare.
Wednesday, November 18th @ 6pm
Please join the ORCRN for an evening of presentations lead by experts from around the country in the field of state preemption as they discuss:
- Where did state preemption come from?
- Trends and impacts on communities
- What can be done to turn the tide in favor of local democracy?
Our panel is expected to include:
- Representative from Local Solutions Support Center to discuss the increased use of preemption to stifle progressive change
- Representative from the Missouri Rural Crisis Center to talk about preemption in the realm of communities of color and food production/access
- Lindsey Schromen-Wawrin, CELDF attorney, to explore preemption, community rights and changing state constitutions to secure local democracy
This informative and engaging event will also include facilitated discussions and questions from attendees.
