This letter to the editor by William Woodcock appeared in the Indiana Gazette on June 7th, 2019.

As a landowner and resident of Grant Township, I’d like to share another point of view regarding a May 28 letter to the editor by Mike Butler of the energy industry lobbying group Consumer Energy Alliance.

TRUE: Grant Township isn’t alone in the struggle against unwanted harm entering it’s borders.

This is a problem across Pennsylvania and other states — small municipalities being financially stressed by large corporations willing to push them into bankruptcy, and then make the municipality look like the offending party.

FALSE: There never was a taxpaying “much needed” energy development activity coming to Grant Township.

Call it what it actually is: A toxic waste dump site.

It’s not tax generating for Grant Township, not well regulated and not job creating.

About “legal and electoral abuse”: Perhaps Mr. Butler should look at Consumer Energy Alliance’s own dealings. Multiple states are currently investigating countless bogus emails generated from the same IP address to lawmakers in those states. One such email was from a man who passed away 21 years ago, according to his widow.

By the way, it is illegal to mislead legislators by falsifying emails. It is not illegal for our township officials to protect the township residents from harm, according to the township code books.

Mr. Butler mentions “radical, irresponsible environmental groups.”

The people of Grant Township adopted two democratically enacted laws that ban permanent disposal and storage of toxic substances.

Last time I looked into it, voting was neither radical or irresponsible.

Who needs or wants a toxic waste dump site near their home?
