In March 2017, Lafayette, CO, became the first municipality in the state to recognize a right to a healthy climate for people and nature, and to ban the extraction of oil and gas as a violation of that right. CELDF assisted in helping residents to draft the law.

On June 19, 2018, City Council attempted to legalize drilling, rather than uphold the people’s Climate Bill of Rights. Community members shut the Council meeting down, blocking the legislation and preserving their right to climate law. MORE…
