This 15 minute audio interview with Merrily Mazza and Kai Huschka aired on the Jefferson Exchange, and was posted on the Jefferson Public Radio’s website, May 22, 2018. It can be listened to HERE.

A brief commentary by Community Rights US Media Team member Curt Hubatch:

Cliff Willmeng once said of Merrily Mazza, his mother and Lafayette, Colorado Councilwoman, that she’s the only publicly elected official in Colorado he’s ever heard publicly challenge the Colorado Supreme Court when it comes to Lafayette’s efforts to assert their right to govern itself and say “no” to fracking in their community.

In a recent email exchange I asked Willmeng what sets his mom apart from most publicly elected officials in Colorado and beyond:

“What separates my mom from all other elected officials is that she understands that unjust laws must be broken. The Colorado Oil and Gas Act (COGA) passed into law by the state legislature is one such law. Until we can get into the courts and fight on the basis that the industry, and government, are violating our rights, she is saying that we will not honor the Colorado Supreme Court’s request to violate the fundamental rights of people, the environment, or our community.”

I highly recommend listening to this 15 minute interview to learn more about Merrily and the democracy problem they’ve run up against in Lafayette, Boulder Country, Colorado and beyond.

Hydraulic fracturing to get oil and gas out of the ground–“fracking”–troubles a lot of people.  Including a majority of the city council in Lafayette, Colorado.

The council adopted a Climate Bill of Rights and Protections last year, and is making other moves to keep fracking activities from starting within city limits.

City Councilor Merrily Mazza is one of the fracking opponents, and she’s taking her message on the road, to Medford last night (May 22), and to North Bend and Eugene Wednesday and Thursday.

She drops by the studio to talk about the legal limits on fracking… and on the people trying to block it. MORE…
