Lafayette Mayor Christine Berg was not “an overseer of Lafayette’s Climate Bill of Rights and Protections” as was printed in the Camera. In fact, she led the way for the Lafayette City Council to gut the bill and pass a weak version into law when sponsor Councilor Mazza was out of town. Berg said publicly that the bill was written in and for Pennsylvania communities, as if it was some outsider’s work. Lafayette community members wrote the bill. By taking out the direct action enforcement clause, Berg gives us meaningless words to protect our health and safety and doesn’t acknowledge that the problem is systemic — the system is rigged against communities and for the oil and gas industry.
